VIJAYA DURDHAWALE

Nashik, Maharashtra

Our Fellow Vijaya Durdhawale hailing from Nashik, Maharashtra, is known for her inspiring journey and relentless pursuit of empowerment for women. Vijaya earned a PhD from TISS, despite facing stern opposition from her parents, who wanted her to lead a traditional married life, and imposed many conditions to discourage her academic pursuits. Influenced by the pioneering work of Savitribai Phule, Vijaya dedicated herself to empowering women through education and employment. She provides support to widows and victims of domestic abuse, working with various groups to organize protests, marches, and movements advocating for women's rights. Her writings, including multiple books and articles, call for changes in patriarchal practices. Vijaya is a strong advocate for women's participation at all levels of politics and joined the Indira Fellowship to represent women from all sections of society. One of her key initiatives is the creation of "Mohalla Clinics" for battered women, offering legal aid and psychological counseling. Additionally, she champions the cause of free public transport for women across Maharashtra, believing it to be essential for their independence. Vijaya Durdhawale's unwavering commitment and strength make her a formidable champion for social justice and an inspiration to countless women.
